Fashion accessories that matter! Thinking outside of the square

Blog post #9

I have always been extremely lazy when it comes to finding and using fashion accessories with my outfits and it probably comes down to 1) being lazy and 2) not knowing whether I am trying too hard. Recently I have noticed a few great accessory combinations which can be used everyday or to top off an outfit when you head out on the town.

A few weeks ago I run into a good mate of mine who is always really well dressed. After chatting for a while the thing that caught my eye was a really simple stainless steel tie bar which he used to hold his skinny tie in place. Prior to this I had always seen tie bars as a really oldschool, middle aged lawyer or banker accessory used more for the functionality of holding his broad, elephant covered tie in place rather than to make a fashion statement.

I went on the search and I found a really simple stainless steel tie bar on eBay for about $5 and not only is it practical but it really makes a great contrast to your outfit along with a nice tie. A general rule of thumb with a tie bar is that your bar should be shorter than the total width of your tie and should be placed between your second and third button.

In a recent photoshoot we did with Aimee Stoddart, our wonderful stylist Briana Catherine-Wall came up with the idea to utilise a cravat and suspender combination. Once again when I think of this I automatically picture an old, rotund man trying to hold up his slacks as a belt no longer does the job. The contrast of the suspenders and cravat really makes a bold statement and makes a simple outfit really special.

Personally I haven't been brave enough to try wearing suspenders yet but I will give it a go one day!

Seeing as its winter there are always some great accessories available that look great and warm you up as well. A trusty accessory which works with pretty much anything is the scarf. I recently bought a red cashmere scarf online and I plan to wear it with a black slim fit suit and a white open collared shirt.

Make sure when you buy your scarf that the material you choose isn't synthetic as the fibres tend to get itchy as you sweat. The best option would be wool or cashmere.

Finally, the best accessory in my opinion is a good watch. I have found a few great companies recently that offer really different style watches at a great price. One in particular is called Welder and they offer most of their watches under $400. I really like unique, industrial style design and Welder has this down to a tee. Other brands to consider are Thomas Sabo, U Boat and Tissot.

The main thing to consider is try to keep it original. Think outside of the square and experiment!
